Car windshields are made up of two pieces of glass that have a film of plastic sandwiched between them, so that, in the event of an accident, they stay together rather than shattering over the occupants and causing harm. Windshields are easily scratched by worn wiper blades or when removing ice. Chipping from rocks or debris on the road is also another factor that can easily ruin a windshield. Once a crack has begun, no matter how small it is, it will continue to grow with the temperature changes.

If you have full-coverage insurance on the vehicle, the insurance company will replace the windshield without increasing your payment, as long as the windshield is professionally installed. Considerations:

If you want a windshield with a built-in antenna, first check the type of connection to the radio. Radio antennas come in many different sizes, and not all are compatible with your radio. Ask to see a chart showing the different degrees of tint on the upper portion of the windshield to see which one is desired. Make sure you know the rules regarding tint in your local area. Some provinces do not allow more than a couple of inches of tint on the windshield. Once the window is installed, you own it, because it will usually not come out without damage.

Warning:

Do not try to remove a windshield yourself if you plan on reusing it (i.e., in cases of car restorations). Even one little hair of glue left on the edge of the windshield will cause it to break. It is better to call one of the mobile windshield companies and have them remove the windshield for you; then, when you are ready to reinstall it, have them come out and do it for you.

The flexible layer of see-through plastic prevents the glass from scattering when broken. Laminated glass also blocks sound and ultraviolet rays. Repairing windshield glass involves not only patching the glass but also repairing the plastic layer in the middle. Repair stops any breaks or cracks from spreading. Repair is a viable option for most small cracks or star-shaped and bulls-eye chips.

Method:

Windshield repair companies aim to restore the integrity of your car windshield by injecting resin into the crack or chip. Before injecting the sealer, the area is completely cleaned to remove all traces of road dirt. Small holes are carefully drilled into the window to allow the resin to flow completely throughout the crack. Once injected, the resin bonds with the glass and plastic layer. Curing under a special light sets the resin and creates a bond with the glass. Polishing to smooth the surface and protect the resin application results in a repaired windshield with very little evidence of damage. Some repair areas may show areas of slight distortion in the glass.

Considerations:

Most windshield repair companies will perform repairs on chips that are smaller than a quarter and cracks that are smaller than 10 inches. Spiderweb cracks that extend out from a center chip often result in full windshield repair. Each break in the windshield should be evaluated individually to determine the safety and viability of any repair.

Warning:

Chips and cracks falling directly into the line of the driver’s vision are also suspect. Some repairs can cause distortion in the glass and, as a result, some companies will not repair this portion of the windshield. Damage on the inside of the windshield cannot be repaired.

Misconceptions:

A professional should gauge the integrity and safety of the windshield before and after repair. Auto glass specialists, windshield repair companies or car dealers can be consulted for help repairing windshields. Some insurance companies will waive deductibles to pay for windshield repairs. This program ultimately saves the insurance company money since repair is considerably cheaper than full windshield replacement.
